After Paris, we traveled to Bilbao, Spain, on our way to Portugal. Although Bilbao is most famous for the architecturally amazing Guggenheim Museum, I also loved the series of fantastic modern bridges along the town's river, the charming narrow cobblestone streets, and the surprisingly beautiful train station. Overall, a perfect introduction to Spain.
P.S. The two photos at the end were taken in the nearby city of Vittoria, where we caught an overnight train to Portugal.
(p.s. Bilbo was (at least partly) named after Bilbao—"Bilbo" was an old word for "sword", since Bilbao was a major steel producer in the later middle ages, and Bilbo carried a magic sword.)
Once I knew we were going to make it to Bilbao, I read up on the city, and realized the connection with LOTR. But I didn't know it was based on the city having been a steel producer--very clever of Tolkien.
